ER&D Program Goals
Increase staff effectiveness in order to improve student performance Grow the union using the power of professional issues What is ER&D? ER&D is a union sponsored (AFT), research based professional development program. It was created by practitioners and researchers to
encourage educators to improve their practice and their students’ achievement by becoming users of research. Distinguishing Features of ER&D Improves student achievement by improving classroom practice Represents union-sponsored professional development Improves teacher quality by increasing teacher knowledge Presents research (level 3) based instructional strategies and discourages quick-fix education fads Promotes teaching classroom educators through a training-of-trainers model Represents researcher-practitioner partnerships and collaboration ER&D is an ongoing process rather than an in-service event that provides credible research (level 3) based information that is essential
to our teachers as they carry out their professional responsibilities. The ER&D program is committed to: offering a non-threatening, non-judgmental learning environment; providing opportunities for thoughtful discussion about teaching and learning with colleagues and researchers; providing opportunities for self reflection and collegial inquiry; making a process available that allows for individual understanding and implementation of strategies that result in real change in practice; providing opportunities for professional growth, continuous learning, and validation of existing practice; and offering a program that builds a sense of pride in the quality of a union service.
